Grão Cia de Dança

THE CLIENT

"Grão Cia de Dança: o movimento de um olhar" is a book-object which portrays conceptual and movement research carried out by Grão - a dance company based in Florianópolis - between 2012 and 2016.

THE CHALLENGE

To develop a book-object that represents the concepts and movement studies conducted by the company "Grão Cia de Dança", reinforcing the poetic identity of the group, through a playful reading experience with sensory and cognitive stimuli.

THE SOLUTION

Each book has five concepts studied by the company: “Moebius” deals with reflection, dizziness, choice, course and chains; ; “Redes” speaks of belonging, availability, listening, interdependence and limits. The themes were worked with the intention of stimulating in a playful way the senses and generating possible reinterpretations of the product with each interaction. The themes were worked out with the intention of stimulating the senses in a playful way and generate possible reinterpretations of the product with each  interaction.

The end of each book is in the middle of the publication, where it rotates 180 degrees. Its central pages have a mirror image of two dancers, emphasizing the non-reading orientation of the book.

The covers were developed using an analog animation technique called scanimation, creating an interaction between the case and the two fronts of the book. The company’s brand is structured with circles and refer to “grain”. This idea was adapted for the covers, creating movement to them. In "Moebius", the grains rotate all together in the circle, while in "Redes" there is always a grain entering the circle, which indicates external influencing elements in the company's studies.

A total of seven copies of the book-object were printed. All the graphics, typography and visual elements were printed in silkscreen. The reticulated photographs work the concept of “grain” and were laser-printed.  It was used opaque, glossy and semi-translucent papers, acetate and PVC for material printing. The binding used was hinged rings, as the book should allow 180º opening and application in various materials.

It was possible to achieve satisfactory and differentiated results using design methodologies as an experimental tool and with the co-participation of the company's dancers in various stages of the project. The book provides a unique experience to the reader, stimulating them sensorially and cognitively in a playful way. It is possible to have several affective-interpretive interactions with each reading, both directly with the product and indirectly with the group Grão Cia de Dance.
